Windows Setup: Installing using the MBR or GPT partition style

In this article

When installing Windows on UEFI-based PCs using Windows Setup, your hard drive partition style must be phối up to support either UEFI mode or legacy BIOS-compatibility mode.

For example, if you receive the error message: Windows cannot be installed to this disk. The selected disk is not of the GPT partition style, it’s because your PC is booted in UEFI mode, but your hard drive is not configured for UEFI mode. You’ve got a few options:

Reboot the PC inlegacy BIOS-compatibility mode. This option lets you keep the existing partition style. For more info, see Boot khổng lồ UEFI Mode or Legacy BIOS mode.

Configure your drive for UEFI by using the GPT partition style. This option lets you use the PC’s UEFI firmware features.

You can preserve your dataand convert the drive using the MBR2GPT tool, or you can choose to reformat the drive using the instructions below. Reformatting will erase all the data on the drive.

Why you should convert your drive

Many PCs now include the ability khổng lồ use the UEFI version of BIOS, which can tốc độ up boot and shutdown times andcan provide additional security advantages. To boot your PC in UEFI mode, you"ll need khổng lồ use a drive formatted using the GPT drive format.

Many PCs are ready lớn use UEFI, but include a compatibility tư vấn module (CSM) that is mix up khổng lồ use the legacy version of BIOS. This version of BIOS was developed in the 1970s và provides compatibility to lớn a variety of older equipment and network configurations, and requires a drive that uses the MBR drive format.

However, the basic MBR driveformat does not support drives over 4TB. It"s also difficult lớn set up more than four partitions. The GPT drive format lets you set up drives that are larger than 4 terabytes (TB), and lets you easily mix up as many partitions as you need.

Make sure Windows cài đặt boots to the correct firmware mode

To automate thisprocess, you"ll need lớn run Windows setup from Windows PE and use a script to lớn detect which mode you’re in before installing Windows. For more info, see WinPE: Boot in UEFI or legacy BIOS mode.

Boot to UEFI Mode or Legacy BIOS mode

There are many reasons as khổng lồ why Windows can"t be installed on a disk, but it"s not immediately obvious as khổng lồ what those reasons are. Fortunately, there is a range of different fixes you can try lớn get Windows installed onto your disk.

Let"s explore how lớn fix the"Windows Cannot Be Installed lớn This Disk" error & the different forms that it can take.

Why Does the"Windows Cannot Be Installed lớn This Disk" Error Appear?

There are several iterations of the “Windows cannot be installed khổng lồ this disk” error. Identifying which iteration you are getting goes a long way to lớn figuring out what you need to vày to get Windows installed.

The error occurs when your hard drive partition style doesn’t support your BIOS (Basic Input/Output System) version.BIOS has two versions:Unified Extensible Firmware Interface(UEFI)and Legacy BIOS.

As you can likely tell by the names, UEFI is more modern while Legacy BIOS is pretty old. Each of these versions only works with a certain hard drive partition style. When there’s a mismatch, you get the “Windows cannot be installed lớn this disk” error.

WhatPartition Style Will Work for You?

To figure out what you need to vì to fix this error, you need lớn take a look at what the second sentence of the error message reads.

If the second sentence in your error message reads “The selected disk is of the GPT partition style,” it means your PC has a Legacy BIOS. BIOS doesn’t work with the GPT partition style, so you’ll need lớn convert to lớn MBR.

If the second sentence in your error message reads“The selected disk has an MBR partition table. On EFI systems, Windows can only be installed lớn GPT disks,” it means your PC has a UEFI BIOS. You can install Windows only khổng lồ GPT partition style disks on an EFI system.

How lớn Fix the "Selected Disk Is of the GPT Partition Style” Error

If your PC uses Legacy BIOS, you can’t install Windows on a GPT partition disk. In this case, you’ll need lớn convert the drive before you can install Windows.

Check Your BIOS Version to lớn Confirm UEFI Isn’t Available

Before you vị that, double-check khổng lồ see if your PC supports UEFI. You can kiểm tra your BIOS version by going into the BIOS when your PC boots. Start your PC, và press the BIOS key. The BIOS key may differ among manufacturers, but the most commonly used keys are F1, F2,F10, F12, or DEL.

When you’re in BIOS, you’ll need to look for the Boot mode. Again, there is no one step-by-step process here. You will need lớn look through all tabs, but generally, there’s a Boottab, & this is where you’ll find Boot mode.

If yourboot mode is set to Legacy and UEFI doesn’t appear as an option, you can’t use your GPT disk partition. Atthis point, you’ll need lớn convert it khổng lồ an MBR partition table.

Convert an MBR Disk to lớn GPT

There are two methods to convert a GPT disk partition lớn MBR. Unfortunately, both methods wipe the data stored on the disk. Alternatively, you could use third-party software to lớn convert your GPT partition disk to MBR without losing data.

1. Convert FromMBR Disk toGPT Using Command Prompt

You can use the command prompt if you don’t have any other operating systems installed on another hard drive. Note that this method will erase all the data stored on the drive you’re about khổng lồ convert.

Start by inserting Windows Installation Disk và wait for the Windows Setupscreen. Press Shift + F10 to xuất hiện the command prompt. Typediskpart and pressEnter. Type list diskto fetch a menu of drives on your computer. Choose the disk you want to lớn convert khổng lồ MBR. This should be the disk on which you want khổng lồ install Windows. You can choose the disk withselect disk 0. Run clean thenconvert mbrto convert the partition lớn MBR.

CMD diskpart utility

When you’re done, exit the command prompt. Return lớn theWindows installation & run the install again.

2. Convert From MBR Disk khổng lồ GPT Using the Disk Management Utility

If your system already has another copy of Windows on a different drive, you can use the Disk Management Utilityon that copy khổng lồ convert a GTP partition disk to MBR.

Type Disk Managementin the search bar beside the Start Menu. The first thành tích in the search results will be Create & Format Hard DiskPartitions. Press Enterto xuất hiện the Disk Management Utility. Find the disk you’re trying khổng lồ convert from the menu displayed in the utility. Right-click on it & select Delete volume. Next, right-click on the same disk & select Convert lớn MBR disk.

How khổng lồ Fix the "Selected Disk Has an MBR Partition Table” Error

If your PC hasa UEFI BIOS, you’ll need a GPT partition disk to lớn install Windows. If you have an MBR partition, you’ll need to convert it lớn a GPT partition disk.

1. Try lớn Disable EFI Boot Sources

If you don’t want khổng lồ convert the partition, go to lớn the BIOS and see if it allows you to lớn disable EFI bootsources. When you’re in the BIOS, navigate khổng lồ the Boot Order section and tìm kiếm for EFI boot sources. Disable it và run Windows installation. Once the installation completes, re-enable EFI boot sources.

If the option to lớn disable EFI sources isn’t available, you’ll need lớn convert the partition.

2. Convert From MBR to lớn GPT Using the Command Prompt

The method we used toconvert the GPT partition lớn MBR also works here. The only thing that will change is the command in step 5. Instead of convert mbr, typeconvert gpt instead.

When you’re done with theprevious steps, exit the command prompt & continue with the installation.

3. Convert From MBR lớn GPT Using a Windows Installation Disk

During the installation process, you’ll be asked toselect a disk on which you want lớn install Windows. Select the disk you want khổng lồ install Windows to and click on Delete.

Next, choose the same disk & click on New and create a partition in GPT style. Click Next and continue with the installation. This should fix the error và you’ll be able khổng lồ move forward with the installation.

Disk Partition Error Solved

Hopefully, this solved your“Windows cannot be installed lớn this disk” error. There are various other issues you may encounter during the Windows installation process. However, they are almost always an easy fix.
